In conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Pink Unity, a focus support group for women cancer survivors under the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) has launched the Inner Strength project to give away free mastectomy bras and prosthesis and provide free health screening to women’s cancer survivors.
The project was launched on October 28th 2015 at Federal Hotel Kuala Lumpur by NCSM’s Principal Patron, Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz. The objective of the project is to enhance the self-esteem, confidence and resilience of physical image of women cancer survivors through provision of subsidies for mastectomy bras and prosthesis and screening services. It is also to recognise the members and survivors who have contributed to Pink Unity and NCSM.
Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Malaysian women. It is estimated that 1 in 19 Malaysian women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Out of 350 members from Pink Unity, 300 of the members are Breast Cancer Survivors from which 150 have had mastectomy and another large number of the members had undergone lumpectomy.
The Inner Strength project also seeks to provide valuable health screening packages that are available at NCSM’s Cancer and Health Screening Clinic to the survivors. The package will include screenings such as mammogram, pap smear, ultrasound and bone density scan in which all costs will be borne by Pink Unity. The project ends on 31 March 2016.
Pink Unity hopes to raise more awareness of breast cancer and as well as to continue their role in supporting and educating women with cancer and their families and carers. The project is benefited from donations during Islamic Fashion Festival (IFF) that was held in 2014. The fashion festival was a collaboration between Pink Unity and IFF to bring fashion and hope particularly to the lives of women inflicted with cancer.
