D.Y.M.M. Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah was invited and kindly accepted the role of Royal Patron in 1989 during his tenure as Yang Di Pertuan Agung.

D.Y.M.M. Sultan Azlan Shah is a Barrister-at-Law. He was Chief Justice Malaysia from 1979-1982, and Lord President of the Federal Court of Malaysia from 1982-1984.

He was appointed as Heir Apparent with the title of Raja Muda and style of Royal Highness 1st July 1983 and proclaimed as Sultan and Yang Di Pertuan Negeri of Perak on 3rd February 1984 after the death of his uncle.

D.Y.M.M. Sultan Azlan Shah was Installed at Ipoh, 9th December 1985. He was elected as Deputy Supreme Head of State of with the title of Timbalan Yang Di Pertuan Agung (Deputy King of Malaysia) on 9th February 1984.

D.Y.M.M. Sultan Azlan Shah was elected King of Malaysia with the title Yang Di Pertuan Agung and style of Majesty on 2nd March 1989.
